Target Advertising, societies decay

Analyzing the reach and influence of advertisers, I think that they research to a point the basis of what we want, and then they shape the rest of the process. By researching and figuring out the basis of what teenagers want, the may conclude certain basic necessities. This necessities can be viewed as problems, at which point advertisers begin to invent what teenagers need. So let me explain. After advertisers have found a problem that strikes a certain group, teenagers, a problem that is superficial and may apply to the majority of teenagers. They come up with solutions, this aren’t really solutions but opportunities, as it has to be understood in an opportunistic society. Then, they appeal to these ‘problems’ creating something innovative and often times unnecessary, degenerating our minds and affecting our life even more. Because now we want that new product which is going to ‘change our life’. It is possible to know the difference between this stages by being able to identify a certain point. Where different products are created to address the same needs. Hundreds of smartphones to upload pictures to Instagram, because we have to feed this social hunger to make public even the most private things of our life.

 

Depending on the definition given to the word ‘fair’, and whether it is analyzed by its denotation or connotation, or it’s just simply part of this language’s logorrhea. It may and may not be fair to advertise to teenager as only one target group. Because in my opinion, there shouldn’t be advertisings, and this is not an attempt to criticize a capitalist society, after all, that’s how it works. However, it is the hoaxes of advertising that cloud our judgment and are a detriment to society and culture, causing our credit cards to max out, and teenagers to get overweight and obese. But returning to the matter in question, teenager do have necessities that part from the same fundaments. Fundaments determined by the same clever advertisers after appealing to a ‘problem’ typical of only teenagers, or who knows, even inventing it.

I think that societies and cultures would improve without the pressure of advertising. However, this depends on the economic model of these societies in question. Because advertising, or at least a true model of what this actually is, is necessary for capitalism. Sadly, advertising moves huge amounts of money, making an extremely unfair country such as Colombia a perfect niche for their hoaxes. From which we will never by liberated unless, well, we leave Colombia, and the western and rotten society.

The purpose of this new Apple product is to make a critique of their misuse of the language for their own marketing purposes. The term Retina used by Apple to refer to their screens is making a clear allusion to the retina of the eye. Giving their screen more importance than it truly deserves, since in this case, most of the existing smartphones that compete with it beat the Apple ‘Retina’ in both resolution and pixel density. Making us ask ourselves which screen should be really called ‘Retina’. Don’t let the misuse of the language in the actual advertising world fool you, always question everything and search for the true technical details that make a fact.

Plato, Enemy of the Republic

Ironically it was Plato who wrote The Republic, or at least that is the translation given to his book. An accurate translation would be The State. Given that although the words translate directly to The Republic, their real meaning translate to The State; a common problem with language.

According to the title, Plato is the Enemy of republics, he proposes a totalitarian and racist state on which the different classes that conform a country are strictly controlled. He divides his state in three different categories, the governing class, the warriors or guardians, and finally the artisans. All based under the theory that people who are born for a specific task, or at a certain social level need to stay at that task or social class. Creating a balance and a distinction between the three classes. By this logic, the descendants of each class would remain on the same position. According to Plato, the inferior classes should not have contact with the higher classes. Suppressing this way any wish to feel superior, or to describe it with other words, tricking humans and segregating their thoughts.

Plato’s model of a totalitarian society has influenced the thoughts of many authors and philosophers. Being possible to relate his theories with the ones of Hegel. Later on leading and influencing Marx. All the above relating itself by the roots of historicism, a mode of thinking strongly criticized by philosopher Karl Popper and sociologist Talcott Parsons.

Referring back to Plato´s totalitarian state, it has been pointed out by renowned philosophers that his theories conform and enemy to the open society, democracy. And although in the modern world democracy has earned it’s placed (poorly implemented), Plato’s theories still have an effect on the historicist and limiting educational system proposed and implemented all over the world after Hegel.

Being the purpose to expose and start a debate about the real effects Plato’s theories and writing have over the world, and how they still affect our society, an open society.
