At this stage of the world’s history, and due to the exponential technological advancements, we have to ask ourselves if our brains are ready to process everything new to humanity. Evolutionary history has shown that humans adapt depending to their necessities. Ancient events such as the development of hair all over the body due to the cold time period, or the enlargement of the human jaw because of the necessity to eat raw food are evolutionary examples of what took place through thousands of years. Since the invention of the light bulb the technological advances have revolutionized the way we live, this has brought new devices and new foods, both a problem from an evolutionary perspective. Things such as TV, junk food and porn are not adequately processed by our brain, and have far greater effects on our brain than the old things our ancestors used to do. This is called supernormal stimuli, which is an exaggerated effect of something in the brain. This type of stimuli is not processed as it should by our brains, so it causes problems such as porn addiction, obesity and problems in social life by isolating humans. This is also a big problem in nutrition, where since the last 200 years the humans have been introducing new foods that aren’t good for our bodies. An example is the case with butter, a food made up of animal fat composed of the type of fat humans have been eating throughout thousands of years. Butter has been falsely linked to the deficits of the circulatory system and believed to induce heart disease. However the statistics show that in 1910 the rate of heart strokes was 10 percent of the population while today it is higher than 40 percent, when foods like butter that are supposed to cause strokes have been replaced for margarine and canola. Which makes us question whether butter is truly bad for our health, an idea that clearly contradicts evolution.
